Went out at lunch to get the book for my book group; typical of me, buying it the day before we're supposed to be talking about it. John seems to begone every time I think about going, and I just haven't felt like chasing three 6-n-unders all around Barnes & Marmoset. So thanks to Metalmensch, I've discovered a new (to me) science fiction subgenre called "Steampunk," which also seems to be a fashion genre (overview here). Actually, I am familiar with some of the literary work, but I just didn't know it had been named. The basic gist is this. After Lord of the Rings came out, V. and T. were debating about how good it was. T. was a big fan of the books from way back, as many of us are, and was disappointed in the whole thing.
